Referendums - One the tools is a Swiss citizen's political toolkit "Popular Initiative"

The popular initiative is like a powerful tool for the people. It's not something the political system can easily control because it's not a response to a political decision but a new idea from the people.

A Popular Initiative is a process where citizens can propose new laws or changes to existing laws for a public vote.

A Popular Initiative can change what the parliament focuses on, literally forcing them to address new issues. Sometimes, the parliament may agree with the initiative to negotiate with its creators and get them to withdraw it.

They can also create a counter-proposal, giving people the chance to vote on both the original idea and the counter-proposal to see which one they prefer.
