Swiss Direct Democracy - "Optional Referendum"
An optional referendum in Switzerland is a process that allows ordinary citizens to challenge a decision made by the parliament.
If the people disagree with a new law, they can collect 50,000 signatures within 100 days to force a vote on that law. Alternatively, eight cantons can also request a referendum.
Once the signatures are collected or the cantons make the request, the law is put to a vote, and only a simple majority of votes is needed to decide whether the law will be accepted or rejected. This gives the people a direct way to influence laws and ensures that their voices are heard.
